Senate of Deseret
I met to day with the Legislature of the state of
Deseret the House of Representatives & senate sat in
Joint session as there was two vacancies in the
Senate by death viz Bishop Newel K Whitney & Cornelius P Lott
the Govornor appointed Wilford Woodruff & Charles C Rich
to fill their places in the Senate. Several were appointed places
in the House I was also appointed by the Lieut Gov as chairman
of the committee on counties in the place of G. A. Smith, who
deliverd his farewell address to the senate & had taken his depar[ture]
as chief Justice of Iron County, many bills came up to day &
passed the Legislature adjourned untill the 1st Monday in Dec

I met again to day with the Legislature of the State of Deseret. The House of Representatives and Senate sat in joint session. As there were two vacancies in the Senate by the death of Bishop Newel K. Whitney and Cornelius P. Lott the Governor appointed Wilford Woodruff and Charles C. Rich to fill their places in the Senate. I was also appointed by the Lieu Governor as Chairman of the Committee on Counties in the place of George A Smith who delivered his farewell address to the Senate and had taken his departure to act as Chief Justice of Iron County. Many bills came up to day and passed the Legislature.
