Discourse 1864-10-10
W. Woodruff (5 min past 1 a.m. of Tuesday) I have desired to see this day
and I would rather see this meeting adjourned. I had not seen
half a dozen of these men, the Prophet, or brother Brigham
but there was a strong spirit that rested upon us and we had no
experience, but I am glad I had sufficient faith to go, for I knew
it was the work of God. Joseph was a plain simple man in his
manners. I have rejoiced from that day to this, we have a quarter
of that company here. Would not there have been an offering
if we had set fire to our houses in this city? It would.
When I heard the list read I mourned over those who had turned
away. The promises given us this evening are sufficient for us to
encourage us and I hope we shall have more like them.
